But despite the fact that I haven’t blogged in three days (such a delinquent!), I’m not going to tell you about what an exciting break it’s been so far (Father Ryan mini-reunion! Ke$ha! Breaking Dawn!). Instead I want to photodump my documentation of tonight’s epic meal.
To celebrate the occasion of Thanksgiving, and the fact that my whole family is reunited under one roof, my mother’s boyfriend took us to Mangia for dinner. Voted by the Nashville Scene writers to be the “Best Weekly Food Event” in 2011 (likely the only weekly food event, but worthy of the title nonetheless!), the evening proved to be one of the liveliest and overindulgent meals of….my life?
I’ll let the photos of the entire *fourteen* course menu do the talking.
ANTIPASTI
Fried green olives stuffed with fresh mozzarella. (So good!)
Bruschetta with lemon artichoke dip.
Lemon risotta cakes with Mangia Mayo. (My favorite of the antipasti!)
Grilled polenta with wild mushroom ragu.
INSALATA
Classic Caesar salad with house made croutons + dressing. (Best Caesar I've ever had!)
Arugula with lemon balsamic vinaigrette + shaved parmesean. (I had two huge servings!)
PASTA
Shell pasta with beef short rib Bolognese. (Oh man incredible.)
Butternut squash gnocchi with pecans and (my favorite!) fried sage.
DANCE BREAK
See me?
I'm the dancing fool.
Oh wait – there’s more food!
ENTRATA
Rosemary lemon chicken.
Anise-steamed zucchini.
Filet of flounder with oven dried tomatoes + basil pesto.
Grilled pork loin with vinegar cherry peppers.
At this point we had all but stopped eating and mostly packed it all up to go. Mom is going to have leftovers for…weeks? It was like Italian dim sum! There was SO much food!
And finally – dessert!
DOLCE
Oven roasted pears with house made ricotta + local honey.
Zeppole! (I actually want my leftover one right now...no, I'm not hungry in the least...)
Zeppole are akin to beignets, or little powdered sugar donuts. They were served to us hot in little paper bags, and we were instructed to “Shake!” upon receiving the them. Gah, this was a wordlessly delicious finish to an epic meal.
I don’t know that I could go back and do this on the regular, but gosh, I’d be darned to say that I didn’t enjoy every single second of the decadent, gluttonous, and exquisite experience. What a little gem to find tucked away in a totally random part of a Nashville suburb. And we were lucky to get in off the wait list! They’re almost totally booked through January – call now if you want to get in for their new Christmas menu!
All in all, a seriously solid way to celebrate my final night in Nashville. Good company, hearty laughter, and tasty wine combine in a fun way, and I’m glad I got to enjoy the evening with my small but joyful family. We were certainly one of the more raucous tables there…
Sated, happy, and somewhat drunk after our four hour adventure.
I am now a half marathoner. I really would love to say I’m simply a “marathoner,” but that would be a grave injustice to the full marathoners, who, at mile 11 when the two groups split, had to run what I’d just done all over again.
But I’m am PROUD of my new title. I’d say I earned it.
2:06???? YES!
I beat the living daylights out of that half marathon. This was faster than my predicted finish by a FULL 15 minutes (and that was my optimistic estimate!), and I would be lying if I said I haven’t been on cloud nine since I found out.
But let’s back up to where we left off yesterday.
After lazing around, running a few errands, and enjoying a day dedicated to nothing other than resting and carbs, my brother came to town and we headed to the Expo to pick up our race packets.
Check in.
We got nifty reusable bags, as well as a great technical shirt.
Because the expo was about to close, Casey and I only had a little time to run around and grab as much swag as possible.
It was crowded!
But we both made off juuuust fine.
Afterwards, we settled in for a cozy night with Being John Malkovich, big bowls of noodle soup from Pho Fusion, and a dysfunctional air mattress. Luckily, 2 of the 3 were quite good, which hopefully made up for the fact that my brother spent the night battling the floor through a semi-inflated piece of plastic. I fared hardly better in my comfy bed – I teetered between nervous insomnia and self-sabatoging nightmares, so needless to say, when the alarm went off at 5:00 am I was more than happy to just get up and DO IT.
Well, speaking of self-sabatoge… I ended up forgetting my bib. So with 15 minutes left before the race start, Casey and I sped home to get my bib, returned downtown, parked illegally, and ran to the race start (13.1? More like 13.5) where they were literally just releasing our corral. CLUTCH.
We hopped the fence like the obviously law abiding citizens we are, high-fived, and were off!
I’ve never felt so amazing while running. Never. My solo 11-miler was harder, longer, and more difficult than the 13 miler running with the crowd, the spectators, and the bands. There was so much energy the entire race. The people watching was great, the signs were clever, and the high fives from folks along the course kept my spirits up the entire time. My stomach emptied out around mile 9 and I was fearful I would hit a wall – but no! I turned the only corner where I felt less than steller and ran right into the GU/Cytomax water station and fueled just enough to power me through the finish. The race planners knew exactly what I needed when I needed it.
Casey was an incredible pace setter and pushed me to my limit, and we both sprinted the last 2 miles to the glorious finish. It was SUCH a success, and I am so proud of both of us for accomplishing the feat, not only alone, but as a team. We were both giddy with the excitement of it all for hours afterward. I now know what a “runner’s high” is.
YES.
I’m already signed up for the Country Music Half Marathon in April. Sea level? Bring it on.
Watch out Nashville!
Post-race, we limped back to the car and headed to breakfast. There’s a totally cute spot in my neighborhood called the Cozy Cottage, and it 100% delivered on every aspect of the desperately needed meal.
The vibe, service, and lack of a wait were all spot on.
And the food was DE-LISH.
Everything was super tasty – the pancakes in my pigs-in-a-blanket were amazing, and Casey’s biscuit and gravy were excellent. I will absolutely be back, there were a hundred other things on the menu I could have chosen!
A shower and a nap subsequently followed. As I was laying down at 11:30, I was ridiculously pleased with how much had been accomplished so early in the day. I’ve done basically nothing since. Which is okay because I’m definitely not a young spry thing anymore – my knees, hips, and ankles are pretty much toast. I’m going to be limping a bit for the next couple of days, I presume.
Whatever. So freaking worth it.
Lo and behold, a girlfriend of mine from college happened to be in town and had also run the half, so we met up tonight under the explicit premise that I be able to order pizza and a beer.
Her selection, City O’ City, delivered on all counts.
Carbs and more carbs. SO GOOD.
Florentine pizza with tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms, and cheese. MEGA YUM.
The menu was so diverse, though, that my friend was able to order a big bowl of udon noodle soup.
The best part? She gave me her leftovers!!!!
Afterwards, like most Sunday nights around these parts, we headed to get ice cream.
Cream cheese and gingerbread flavors in a sugar cone.
And now I’m full, sore, tired, and excited to crash hard tonight. What a good day. What a good weekend! I am happy as a clam. xoxo
In case you were curious, I’m pretty darn excited to be starting a REAL LIFE JOB tomorrow. Pretending I’m a “blogger” by printing it on business cards does not make it legitimate employment, although I’d be lying if I said that wouldn’t be an awesome job. Some folks are curious, so although I probably won’t write about work much, I am the new Email Marketing Specialist for an advertising agency in town.
Seeing as this was my final celebration of midday freedom, I decided to a) sleep in b) schedule a long run and c) expect very little from myself. Hurray! Success on all accounts!
Pre-run fuel. You know the drill.
I still don’t feel I have my fueling needs perfected at this point, but on my 9 miler last week, when I only had one slice of toast, my stomach emptied COMPLETELY at mile 7.5ish, and the last mile was TOUGH. So, more food! It meant I waited around a little longer to digest more fully, but I didn’t end up hungry until mile 9, so I think it was successful? I definitely think I’m going to take a gel or some Shot Bloks during my 11 mile run up next, just to see how my stomach and muscles handle the extra calories.
Unfortunately, my best running friend went into the trash today.
Insert huge sad face.
My Monster iFreePlay has been my best workout buddy possible over the last 2ish years. As you can see from the foam rubbing away around the ear pieces, and as you can’t see, the tape wrapped around the middle, this piece of equipment has been well-loved. It’s cordless, compact, nifty (the Shuffle just plugs right in!), and it keeps my ears warm during cold runs. It stays in place, and I don’t have to shove little nubbies in my ears and fiddle with them constantly when they slip out of place – it doesn’t wiggle a bit. I definitely need to get another one before the big day! (20 days and counting!)
And I really need to get new music, despite overhauling it pretty significantly a few days ago. Any suggestions???
So, based on Monica’s patterns, I ran with a Powerade today (free from the Panerathon!), and when I finally cracked it open at mile 5, I noticed significant improvement in my overall energy later in the run. Despite my hemming and hawing about sugary electrolyte drinks, looks like I need them after all.
Shoo, that's a lot of running.
If only I were faster. 100+ minutes of running? I contemplated an ice bath when I got home. My legs are shot. I’m taking the next two days to heal and hopefully hit up some yoga. If I ever train for a long race again, I’m making sure it’s a trail run. Road running is rough.
Back at my car (I drove to a new path today), I downed the waiting bottle of water and another Panerathon freebie.
Based on my (poor) math skills, there were ~8 g of protein in this. Win!
But I was still totally hungry, so after limping inside, I forewent [word?] a shower in favor of immediate satiation.
Double coconut pumpkin protein oats with cottage cheese, chias and pecans.
This was crafted while running. I cooked up 1/4 c oats and the rest of my morning banana in coconut milk, then added 1/2 c pumpkin, 1/3 c cottage cheese, half a scoop of protein powder, and topped it with toasted pecans, unsweetened coconut flakes and chia seeds. It was good, but I inhaled it too fast to really appreciate it. No joke, as soon as I was finished, my first thought was, “Okay, what to eat next?”
These guys were staring at me from my neglected garden.
The bounty from my garden (seriously, look at that! And what is that long yellow pepper? Anyone know?) simply begged me to craft something tomato-related, and once I saw this, it was decided. Deb at Smitten Kitchen is just speaking to me lately! First red wine cake and now this!
And it was a bit of a labor of love.
Getting ready to roast my serving size of one.
Drooooool....
Roasted tomatoes are so sexy, n’est-ce pas?
I followed the recipe precisely, except I quartered everything and didn’t roast up the garlic, as all I had was the pre-minced stuff. And I added parm on top of the mound of cheddar for good measure.
Cheeeese....
While waiting for it to finish, I whipped up some sunflower butter cookies to take to work tomorrow. I want everyone to be able to eat them, so they’re vegan, gluten and nut-free…and kind of strange? Whoops.
Really simple.
I used a flax egg and followed Averie’s recipe, but hers turned out WAY better than mine.
They were only manageable after chilling the dough a bit. (The first round was a flop.)
But they'll probably get eaten anyway.
I’ve decided that sunbutter in epic proportions is like truffle oil, or cheese straws. There is such a thing as “too much of a good thing.” Oh well.
And the glory bubbling away in the oven?
Um, glorious.
After cooking for almost 2 hours, I face-planted directly into this. Perf.
I also watched The Sing Off tonight because my friend’s brother is in the Yellow Jackets (I know, Glee was on! I don’t have live TV and couldn’t watch the premiere tonight. I am sad. ), and it thrilled me to my core to hear the group Delilah. Despite the fact that I kind of hate the song itself (I don’t love bloody references in pop music), I LOVE me some good a cappella, and all-girl groups at that.
It reminded me of the time I was ellipticalling away the evening at the Y and caught this, and despite it being soundless, I was still blown away.
Although I have no pictures to back up this title, suffice it to say that today involved a lot of yoga. Between a long conversation with a CorePower manager and then a 75 minute super hot super intense Power Vinyasa class at a different studio tonight, I’ve been in yoga mode today. Which totally rocks.
Also, the class I took tonight started at 8:30. I left close to 10:00. How a million percent cool is that??? I’ve never taken a class that late in the evening, and I’m thrilled that it seems to be a common theme among Denver studios. Many gyms offer classes at the crazy hour of 5:30am – why NOT a late night class?
The best part? It was completely dark aside from some dim candles along the perimeter of class.
This is a terrible photo – my camera basically refused to take the shot. And it wasn’t quite this dark, but it was dark enough that despite the high energy feel of the class, I left feeling ready for bed. It also made me feel less dumb when I tumbled over in a relatively easy pose. What can I say, it was new to me!
The class tonight was one of the toughest I’ve ever completed. I was a shaky, sweaty, exhausted mess by the end. Who are we kidding, I was panting after the first series! I will be back for more!!!

Eats today, which were too few and far between post lunch.
I know it looks gross. Trust me, it was tasty.
This ugly thing was a spinach, yogurt, almond milk, banana, protein and cocoa powder smoothie with granola on top. The new blender my hosts own seriously liquified the ingredients like it was, well, its job. It was far too muddy colored and drinkable for my tastes. I like to eat my smoothies with a spoon!
A lunch of crudites with hummus, and cheese toast with avocado. Followed by unpictured strawberries.
Post-yoga teacher training chat, I wandered around my dream neighborhood again in search of coffee and a snack before checking out another apartment. (This one may be the winner! Gotta apply and be selected for it, first. Keeping my fingers crossed!) This coffee shop was a good one.
I ate that almond sour cream cake with an iced coffee, and enjoyed the scene inside the place. The place felt totally hipster – except I haven’t seen a single hipster yet! So different from Nashville. But in a good way. I don’t fit in with hipsters, but I do feel like I fit in with the youthful mix of folks in this city. Probably because people here continue to be SO NICE.
(I should perhaps clarify that most hipsters are nice. I’m just too mainstream for them, and gosh, they intimidate me.)
I love walking into a local joint without feeling pressured by the regulars to, I don’t know, somehow demonstrate I belong before ordering and sitting. Common Grounds felt just right. Spacious and cozy, with good coffee, food, and vibes. I will be back!
Yeah. Definitely. I’ll be back.
Pre-yoga, I made the mistake of eating only carrots and hummus, then carrots and sunflower butter. Remind me to never again take a 98 degree exercise class with only carrots in my stomach. That probably added to the difficulty. So, upon returning, shivering in the cool Denver night, I fixed myself a recovery snack.
This served as dinner and dessert. Fail. I need a real dinner tomorrow. Cottage cheese, a peach, and almonds don’t cut it. Oh well. But protein, carbs, and fat? I’ll take it.
Tomorrow’s post should hopefully include my first video! Whoop whoop! I’ll leave you with a preview.
